Use of resistance training in cardiac rehabilitation: a review of literature
Abstract
The resistance training has been recommended as an integral part of a cardiac rehabilitation program. The justifications are provided to minimize the deleterious effects of age and the reinclusion of daily activities. However, some cardiovascular responses to this kind of training are not accepted by some professionals, who decide for a more conservative, recommending cyclical and continuous aerobic activity. The aim was to verify, through a literature review, the acute and chronic effects of resistance training in cardiac rehabilitation. For scientific articles that were searched in the databases Pubmed, Scielo, Medline, Lilacs and Conchrane, using the locators "Resistance Training", "Coronary", "Disease", “Treinamento”, “Doença” and “Coronariana”. Considering the material selected from literature, it was included those articles related only to acute and chronic adaptations to resistance training, cardiovascular complications in tests and physical exercises, and the adherence of individuals with this type of training. Based on the papers presented, we find that the resistance training is an important tool in cardiac rehabilitation and, if prescribed and implemented in an appropriate manner, offers great benefits with low risk to rehabilitated.
